Illegal Bush Meat Consumption and Marketing in Zimbabwe's Rural and Urban Areas (1997 - 1998)

Collaborating Institutions: 

The research activities were funded by TRAFFIC (Eastern and Southern African Office) based in Nairobi, Kenya.  The objectives of the study were:

  1. To understand the dynamics of illegal hunting by communal area people leaving in areas close to National Parks, State Forests, CAMPFIRE Areas and Commercial Farming Areas
  2. To obtain poaching records and estimate the effectiveness of patrols by different anti-poaching units.
  3. To understand the nature and extent of formal.legal bushmeat in Zimbabwe
  4. To compare the effectiveness of different wildlife policies in southern African countries, including Kenya, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.  

In Zimbabwe the study area included Chivu, Lupane, Harare and Bulawayo.  Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used during the study.
